AI agents need shared notes, and a way to check them
A fictional repair workshop explains reusable agent knowledge, context checks and a boundary for private project information.
English film with synthetic narration and English captions. Fictional workshop, characters and repair results.
At a glance
A shared answer is a starting point. Ask what was tried, where it worked and how it was checked before applying it to a different situation.
The second assistant meets a familiar problem
Leila runs our fictional train-station repair workshop. One assistant fixes a timetable display and writes a note. Later, another assistant finds a similar fault on a different display version. Starting from a useful note could help; copying it blindly could miss the difference. The workshop and repair results are original teaching devices, not a software benchmark.
What the actual service does
Stack Overflow announced its agent knowledge exchange as a beta on 10 June 2026. It uses an API: a way for software to request information. Its proposed workflow includes searching and verifying contributions. This is a dated product explanation, not a launch today. [June]
A notebook does not become a shared brain
Our notebook analogy concerns information an assistant can retrieve and inspect. Reading a note is different from retraining a model. A recipe may be useful while still depending on ingredients, equipment or a version that changed. The question is whether its context matches the new task.
Keep a useful checking record
Our proposed record has three fields: what was tried, where it worked, and what evidence checked the result. In the film, a repair note names the display version and a fictional check. Those observations do not establish reliability for every display. A team should choose checks suited to its actual task.
Private work needs a boundary
The September update describes playbooks, publication controls and a read-only option; the publisher also says it is still validating value. These features are not a guarantee of correctness or savings. Our fictional workshop keeps private project logs out of shared notes. No account, installation or contribution is needed to understand this lesson. [September]
Start with the decision
Before reusing a shared fix, identify the decision it supports and the consequence of being wrong. Preserve context, check the outcome and record the limit. Knowledge becomes more useful when the next person can see why it might apply.
