A beautiful building model can still be out of date

In a fictional office, Omar sees a polished building model while a room feels wrong. The useful question is not how realistic the model looks. It is which physical asset the data describes and when that data was observed.

English animated explainer with synthetic narration and English captions. Omar, the office building, pump and disconnected data feed are fictional. The stale-feed sequence illustrates our original asset → feed → freshness → verification checks; it does not depict an actual installation, monitored fault, engineering diagnosis or measured operational outcome. No Autodesk or Frost & Sullivan affiliation is claimed.

Omar manages a fictional office building. On his screen, the building’s digital model looks perfect. Every pump shows green. But down in the plant room, one pump sounds wrong, and the room feels warm. A building information model can organise a building’s geometry and asset

information. A model alone is not a live operating-data feed. A digital twin connects a model to operating data, such as sensors, the building management system and maintenance records, so the picture can change with the building. In our fictional atrium, the pump in the

model is linked to a sensor on the real pump. Each reading arrives with a time stamp. Then the feed stops. The model keeps showing the last reading it received, so the pump still looks fine. A connected model is only as useful as its

data. It has to be linked to the right asset, and the data has to be fresh. A market report by Frost and Sullivan, hosted by Autodesk, describes twins at different levels, from gathering and describing data, to predicting, and at the top, acting on

their own. So not every twin predicts, controls, or even updates continuously. It depends on how it was built, and how it’s maintained. Omar checks the time stamp, sees the reading is hours old, and sends someone to look at the pump. Before you rely

on a building model, ask four things. Which asset is this? What data feeds it? How fresh is that data? And who verifies it? A beautiful model is a starting point. Fresh, verified data is what makes it useful. Ahmadreza Samadi. More at a-samadi.com
